Saginaw Children's Zoo: Animals, Train, Carousel & Our Tips for Visiting

The Saginaw Children's Zoo is one of my favorite places to spend a relaxed couple of hours in Saginaw. It's beautifully landscaped, wonderfully shady, easy to walk and filled with fun little surprises around nearly every corner.

The Saginaw Children's Zoo is beautifully landscaped with shady paths, peaceful pond areas and lots of places to slow down and enjoy the scenery.

You'll find happy little penguins, playful otters, goats you can brush, fascinating reptiles, a miniature train, a beautiful carousel and one of my absolute favorite features — a lovely pond with stepping stones and a swinging bridge over the water.

It's affordable, friendly and relaxing, with enough to see and do to make the visit interesting for kids, parents, grandparents and adults traveling without children too.

We spent about 1½ hours exploring the Saginaw Children's Zoo, which felt just right.

Travel-MI Tip: If your kids want to ride the train and carousel, play on the playground, interact with the goats or stop for lunch, you can easily spend longer than 1½ hours here.

Is the Saginaw Children's Zoo Worth Visiting?

YES! I love this zoo.

It's affordable, safe, friendly and relaxing.

Unlike some huge zoos where a visit can become an all-day expedition, the Saginaw Children's Zoo is wonderfully manageable. You can slow down, watch the animals, enjoy the scenery and still experience a lot without feeling worn out afterward.

One of the things that impressed me most was the amount of shade. There are tons of mature trees, shady seating areas and many animal-viewing areas where you can linger without standing in direct sun.

How Long Do You Need at the Saginaw Children's Zoo?

Plan about 1½ hours for most visits.

That gives you enough time to stroll through the zoo, see the animals, enjoy the grounds and stop at the exhibits without rushing.

Families may want to allow extra time if the kids want to play, ride the train or carousel, interact with the goats or stop for lunch.

The manageable size is one of the things I really appreciate about this zoo. You can have a full experience without feeling worn out afterward.

My Favorite Part: The Pond, Stepping Stones & Wobbly Bridge

Surprisingly, my favorite spot at the Saginaw Children's Zoo isn't even an animal exhibit.

It's the pond!

I LOVE this area.

You can walk across stepping stones over the water, wander along beautifully landscaped pathways and cross a fun swinging bridge. It was completely unexpected and adds so much personality to the zoo.

Be sure to explore the reptile area because there are some fantastic critters hiding inside.

We saw snakes, spiders including tarantulas and some seriously interesting reptiles.

But one animal really caught my attention: the blue-tongued skink!

And yes — its tongue really is THAT blue.

There Are Lots More Animals to See!

There are plenty more animals to discover as you wander through the Saginaw Children's Zoo.

Animals at the Saginaw Children's Zoo include penguins, otters, prairie dogs, wolves, deer, alpacas, an alligator, reptiles, goats and a variety of birds.

We especially enjoyed watching the prairie dogs pop in and out of their burrows in Prairie Dog Town.

That variety is one of the things I like about this zoo. Even though it's easy to explore in a couple of hours, there's always another enclosure or animal around the corner to stop and see.

Should You Ride the Saginaw Zoo Train?

If you're visiting with children, the miniature zoo train is definitely worth considering.

Adults can ride along too!

The little red train makes a relaxing loop through the zoo and gives everyone a chance to sit down and enjoy the scenery for a few minutes. For kids, the train ride can easily become one of the highlights of the day.

Ride availability and pricing can change, so check the zoo's current information when planning your visit.

Near the front of the zoo you'll find another charming attraction: the carousel.

Look closely at the animals and decorative details while you're there. It adds another wonderfully nostalgic touch to the zoo.

There's More Than Animals for Kids to Enjoy

One of the reasons the Saginaw Children's Zoo works so well for families is that kids have places to burn off some energy between animal exhibits.

Don't Skip the Gift Shop!

Yes, there is a gift shop — and it's quite lovely!

Definitely take a few minutes to browse before you leave.

One of the highlights for me was seeing T-shirts featuring animals from the zoo. I always enjoy souvenirs that actually connect back to the place you visited rather than something generic.

Lunch, the Café & Shady Picnic Tables

Another thing I really appreciate about this zoo is how easy it is to take a comfortable lunch break.

There is a café where you can grab food and drinks, plus several picnic areas throughout the zoo. Many of the tables are tucked beneath mature trees, so you can sit in the shade and relax instead of eating in the blazing sun.

If you're visiting with children or grandparents, having food, seating and shade all close by makes the outing much easier.
