Why do we Celebrate Labor Day? Why is it Important to Celebrate Labor Day?
Per the U.S. Department of Labor, Labor Day is a celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. It began in the late nineteenth century when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.
Oregon was the first to pass a law recognizing Labor Day, on February 21, 1887.
When Was the First Labor Day?
The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882. The celebration took place in New York City with the Central Labor Union.

- The 79th Franklin Community Association Labor Day Round Up family fair - The Round Up is a fun family fair that runs from 10 am to 3pm on Labor Day, Monday September 2nd, with a Parade at Noon. This fun Labor Day Weekend Michigan event is located at the FCA Park. Come on out for a parade at noon, huge inflatables, fun pony rides, petting farm, magic show, jugglers, interactive circus, midway games, face painting, food, classic car show and more.
- Art in the Village - on Labor Day, Monday September 2nd, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday at Franklin Village Green on Franklin Road between 13 Mile and 14 Mile in Franklin. Free admission!
