Ice Skating Detroit: If you are looking for fun things to do this winter in Michigan, take your friends and family ice skating!  It's a perfect Michigan winter activity for the whole family! 

Chris and I love to visit ice rinks just after dark to enjoy twinkling lights, hot chocolate and fun exercise that we can enjoy together.

1. Go Ice Skating At Campus Martius, Detroit Ice Skating Rink!

The Rink at Campus Martius Park is a fantastic family-friendly outdoor skating rink in Michigan.  It is a popular tourist and local destination in the State of Michigan. 

  • Not only can you go ice skating, but you can see the incredible Detroit skyline and Detroit’s Christmas Tree! 


Did you know...at this Detroit ice skating rink, the world’s best Olympic and US champion athletes perform and skate here annually?

Where: The Rink at Campus Martius Park, Woodward Avenue in Downtown Detroit

When: Downtown Detroit ice skating! Open seven days a week, including holidays, from November through March.  Double check the hours and get more info at the Detroit Downtown Partnership.

How much does it cost to ice skate in Detroit? 2022/2023 Tickets and skate rentals at The Link may be purchased onsite and is first come, first serve. Pricing: Adults are $12 and children are $9.

2. Detroit Skating Club: Indoor Public Skating!

Want to learn how to ice skate?

Detroit Skating Club's "Learn to Skate" program is perfect for all ages beginning at 3 years old! Includes teens and adults too! Their coaches specialize in teaching quality techniques at all skill levels and some of their coaches even coached at the Olympics!

  • The Detroit Skating Club is an indoor Detroit ice skating rink so you can stay warmer this winter!

Indoor Public Skating - Available for $5 per person on select Saturdays and times in November and December. Skate rental available, $5 per skate rental. See their website for details.

3. The Rink at Royal Oak - New for 2022-2023!

The Rink at Royal Oak opens in Centennial Commons November 19, 2022. The rink is 60 feet x 90 feet and can accommodate up to 250 skaters at a time. The attraction will be open through February 19, 2023.

Where: Located in downtown Royal Oak’s Centennial Commons Park, located at 221 E. 3rd St., Royal Oak, MI

Admission is $10 and skate rentals are $5. Hours are 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday-Tuesday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday, and 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday.


4. John Lindell Ice Arena - Royal Oak

If you are looking for a FANTASTIC place to go indoor ice skating in Michigan, check out the John Lindell Ice Arena in Royal Oak!  They offer indoor skating nights for families and separate adult nights.  There is a skating fee.

When: Public skate nights are offered 7 days a week, check their schedule on their website.

You can rent ice skates at the John Lindell Ice Arena. 


5. Mike Modano Ice Arena: Westland, MI

Looking for open skate nights in Detroit? Mike Modano Ice Arena offers fantastic indoor ice skating in the Detroit area.

The Westland Mike Modano Ice Arena offers recreational skating with open skate nights, beginner lessons, competitive United States Figure Skating (USFS) programs, hockey conditioning and hockey teams.

6. Sled Hill and Ice Rink at Beverly Park

Where: Sled Hill and Ice Rink at Beverly Park, 18801 Beverly Rd, Beverly Hills, MI 

The sled hill and outdoor ice rink at Beverly Park are open for public use (weather dependent). The park is open from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.  You will need to bring your own skates. 


7. Birmingham Outdoor Ice Skating Rink
Barnum Park Ice Skating Rink

Where: 1101-1399 Pierce St, Birmingham, MI 48009

When:  Rink Closed After Dark

This winter, grab your ice skates and drive to the Barnum Park Ice Rink, located off Pierce St. near George (see our map). Outdoor ice skating Detroit.

  • Skating is free. You will need to bring your own skates. 

City crews work to maintain the rink, however skaters can shovel any snow that accumulates.  Might be a good idea to have a shovel in your car just in case.

Hockey is permitted at the rink from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. daily.


8. Bowers School Farm Winter Park

Where: 1219 E Square Lake Rd, Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304

When: January 6, 2023 - February 6, 2023 

  • There is a general admission fee for everyone and then additional costs for snow tubing and ice skating rentals. 

Enjoy outdoor ice skating, snow tubing, bonfires, comfort foods, entertainment, select animal experiences, and more! Winter Park is the ultimate Michigan winter destination! Chris and I are excited to visit Bowers School Farm this winter!

Tubing: Slide down one of the coolest sledding hills in Metro Detroit. Watch their tubing hill sparkle with lights in the evenings! Tubing Rentals are for 50 minute time increments starting on each hour. How fun!

Ice Skating Rentals: Start your own favorite wintertime tradition at Bowers School Farm Winter Park's outdoor rink!  Purchase your rental skates on site.


9. Holiday Nights in Greenfield Village

Where: Greenfield Village

If you want to get into the Christmas mood, book your tickets early for Holiday Nights in Greenfield Village! While wandering the quaint village listening to Christmas carols, you can enjoy FREE ice skating and skate rental!  There will also be:

  • Live musical performances
  • Holiday cooking demonstrations
  • Skilled artisan demonstrations and so much more!


10. Farmington Hills Ice Arena: Awesome Ice Skating Rink Farmington Hills

So guys, if you want to practice your ice skating skills year round, check out the Farmington Hills Ice Arena! It's in a great ice skating Detroit location. 

Where: Farmington Hills Ice Arena, 35500 W. 8 Mile Rd. Farmington Hills, MI 

When:  Year round indoor ice skating (check their website for closures, dates, times and open skating rules/rentals).

The 70,000 square-foot Ice Arena provides both recreational and competitive skating opportunities. The Farmington Hills Ice Arena offers youth and adult hockey programs, public skating, Learn-to-Skate programs and figure skating. 

So come on out and try ice skating in Farmington Hills!


11. Riley Park Ice Rink - Farmington MI

Where: 33113 Grand River Ave, Farmington, MI 48335

When: Opens in mid-December.

The Riley Park Ice Rink is a 4,800-square-foot refrigerated rink, located in Downtown Farmington, Michigan.  The Riley Park Ice Rink does not have skate rentals, but at times there are available donated skates to borrow.


12. Rosie's Park - City of Madison Heights

Where: 1111 E Farnum Ave, Madison Heights, MI 48071

Lighted Inline Skating Rink / Ice Rink (Weather Dependent). Check the Madison Heights Facility Calendar for more information this winter.


13. Lake St. Clair Metropark

Where: 31300 Metro Parkway, Harrison Township, MI 48045

Grab your skates and head for the lake at Lake St. Clair Metropark where you will find an outdoor family ice skating rink.  Amenities include the ice skating rink, a comfort station, a warming room, and picnic tables for resting near the parking area.
