These five ladies performing this matcha tea ceremony traveled from the Detroit region to the Japanese Cultural Center, Tea House and Gardens in Saginaw to provide this fantastic cultural experience just for us.
Let's Begin the Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony!
It takes years to learn and perfect this lovely traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony as there are so many steps and movements involved with the tea preparation and serving.
We learned that...
An important part of the ceremony involves sharing the elaborately prepared tea with guests.
- When a guest is provided tea, she will make a slurping noise when the tea is gone to let the host know the tea was so good she drank it all.
Another important part of the ceremony is when the guests have a chance to admire the intricate vessels in which the tea is stored, served and prepared. It is a very enjoyable part of the ceremony for the guests.
Chris and I enjoyed our Matcha tea and yes, we slurped to show we finished it all and greatly enjoyed our tea! This ceremony was held outside but many times it is held inside the lovely tea house at the Japanese Cultural Center.
At the conclusion of the Japanese Tea Ceremony, we were provided lovely Japanese sweets to try. What a fun experience in the Great Lakes Bay Region!
We learned so much while watching this peaceful matcha tea ceremony. It is a quiet and respectful ceremony for all involved.

After the conclusion of the Japanese Tea Ceremony, take time to wander their scenic paved trail, enjoy the blooming cherry trees (around June) and just relax near the lovely waterfall.
There are lots of picturesque spots for photography, such as the iconic red bridge, sparkling pond, gazebo and tea house.

Stroll the Japanese Garden
Their beautiful garden is open to the public (weather permitting) from 12:00- 4:00 pm, April through October. FREE!
Tea and Tour
Tea and Tours are available April through October on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday's. Enjoy an informational garden and tea house tour that includes history, construction, green tea and sweets in the tea house.
Call the Japanese Cultural Center for the current days and times for the tea ceremonies and tours. There is a fee.
Traditional Tea Ceremony
If you wish to experience a traditional Tea Ceremony, that includes Matcha Tea (powdered green tea) and Japanese sweets, contact the Japanese Cultural Center for current offerings. There is a fee.

Saginaw Michigan is home to the incredible Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge which is absolutely one of my favorite places to visit in this area. It's a safe place to go for a long nature walk with free parking.

Visit Saginaw! There's so many things to do, like wild life drives, a zoo, museums and theaters!
While you are there, you need to check out the Castle Museum! Since 1979, the Castle Museum has been preserved by the Historical Society of Saginaw County. It's another Great Lakes Bay Region treasure!
