Walk Through a Tropical Butterfly Conservatory
Inside the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory, visitors step into a warm tropical environment filled with lush plants, waterfalls, and thousands of butterflies flying overhead.
The exhibit features butterflies and moths from around the world, and it’s amazing to watch them glide through the air, rest on flowers, and sometimes even land on visitors.
When you enter the butterfly exhibit, you will receive a butterfly field guide that helps identify many of the species you will see.
Two of my favorite butterflies here are the Common Morpho and the Common Birdwing, and both are very prevalent in the exhibit. The bright blue shimmer of the morpho butterflies is especially beautiful as they glide through the tropical garden.

Butterflies Are Blooming at Frederik Meijer Gardens - WOW! Yummy food being delivered for the hungry butterflies!
One of the best ways to observe butterflies up close is at the numerous feeding stations! The photo above shows the delicious platters of food being delivered to the hungry butterflies! Butterflies dine on trays filled with fresh fruit such as:
- dragon fruit
- oranges
- kiwi
- star fruit
- pineapple
- blood oranges
The conservatory itself is beautiful as well, featuring an indoor waterfall, tropical river, and lush greenery that creates a peaceful atmosphere.
There are also plenty of benches throughout the conservatory, allowing visitors to sit and enjoy watching the butterflies. Many times when you sit still, butterflies will land nearby offering a close-up view!
Because the environment is tropical, it is quite warm inside the butterfly exhibit, so wearing layers is a good idea. I usually wear a tank top under a thin sweater. If you arrive with a coat, there is a coat storage area available before entering.
Another fascinating detail is that new butterflies emerge weekly, so every visit offers something a little different.

Above is the famous The American Horse (1999) by Nina Akamu. This incredible bronze sculpture of a horse was inspired by Renaissance-era designs and one of several identical statues worldwide.
Watch My Video of the Lovely Waterfalls!
One of my favorite areas is the large pond filled with koi fish. Even in early spring, you can sometimes see the fish swimming under the ice or near the waterfalls, which is very cool to observe.
Nearby you’ll find:
• scenic waterfalls
• numerous sculptures throughout the gardens
• peaceful walking trails
The Japanese Garden is especially outstanding. This area includes ponds, waterfalls, and a beautiful arched walking bridge.
A scenic boardwalk overlooks several ponds and water features, creating one of the most peaceful places in the gardens.
Even in early spring, it is a wonderful place to walk and enjoy the scenery.
